POWELL, John, age 88, of Huber Heights, passed away Thursday, November 27, 2025.  John was a retired Sgt. Major with the U.S. Army and retired from Sinclair College after 15 years.  He was an instructor at Epizounders Marshall Arts of Huber Heights, John Powell Sports Center, John Powell Judo Club and KittyHawk Judo Club at WPAFB.  John was a member of Living Word Church, Huber Heights Lodge 777 F&AM, Scottish Rite Valley of Dayton, Antioch Temple Shriner.  He was inducted in the Arm Force Judo Hall of Fame, enshrined in the Special Forces Museum and received the Master Parachutist Combat Infantry Badge during Vietnam.

John was preceded in death by his parents, Harry & Dorothy; son, Gregory; brothers, Harry Powell & George W. Fisher; sisters, Nina Allen, Dorothy Dunn & Rebecca Fisher.  He is survived by his loving wife, Peggy I.; sons & daughter-in-law, Michael & Kimberly, Anthony; step-son, Andrew S. & Terry Hopper; step-daughter, Julie D. Harleman; 10 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; adopted son, Brian Higgins; numerous nieces, nephews & many other relatives & friends.

Funeral service 11:00 AM Thursday, December 4, 2025 at Living Word Church, 926 E. National Road with Pastor Pat Murray officiating.  Interment Glen Haven Memorial Gardens.  The family will receive friends on Wednesday from 4-7 PM at the church.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to VA Victory Ridge Hospice or Tunnel to Towers in John’s memory.
